Charles A. Vernale Award
Connecticut State Dental Association

Thank you for your interest in the Charles A. Vernale Scholarship Award. This scholarship is given in memory of Dr. Charles A. Vernale, an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who resided and practiced in Waterbury, Connecticut and died in 1971.

Dr. Vernale was a life-long resident of Waterbury. He was graduated from Fairfield University and the Georgetown University School of Dentistry in Washington, D.C. He served in the Army and upon completion of his tour of duty he returned to Waterbury to begin a practice in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1958.

As Dr. Vernale’s practice grew, he believed that children should be taught good oral health practices. Dr. Vernale initiated several research studies in school-based programs based on his concerns for the health and well being of children.

Not only was Dr. Vernale active in children’s health, he was also interested in the health and well being of adults. Dr. Vernale was a Diplomat to the American Board of Oral Surgery. He served as an officer in the Waterbury Dental Society and in 1971 was elected President of the Connecticut State Dental Association. He was a commissioner o the Waterbury Board of Health for many years. Dr. Vernale was respected as one of Connecticut’s most talented and oral surgeons of his era.

This scholarship was endowed by his colleagues in the dental profession, and is a tribute to his life and work. It is awarded and managed by the Connecticut State Dental Foundation.
